After months of stockpiling socks, shirts, flashlights, slacks, ties and such potentially indispensable items as battery-operated fans, jump ropes, steel-toed rain boots, and umbrella flashlights on his (state-side missionary) brother's bed, it was finally time to pack. The ordeal took the better part of two days. And, even though we'd spent five months gathering this mission-bound booty, we made at least five trips to the local Walmart during those final hours to gather all that fell through the cracks of our planning: a soap dish, soap, sunglasses, a pedometer, stationery, another jump rope, sunscreen, snacks, Scotch tape, batteries, more batteries, and still more batteries. Strategic decisions were made: nix the uncomfortable (but possibly vital) steel-toed rain boots to save precious space in the carry-on; fill the carry-on with snacks; stop fretting about weight and size limits in the checked bags and go-to-bed-already-it's-one-a.m-and-we're-leaving-for-the-airport-at-seven-thirty! (Actual departure time was more like 7:45.)
